Using 3D Animation

Jun 23, 2009 9:42 am by Martin Cuccia-Nilsen

As visual effects get better and better we see the use of 3D animations more and more. We've come a long way since the days of Tron. Actually the first use of 3D graphics in a major motion picture was in the movie Futureworld (1976). Now we see 3D effects everywhere, but why do are these 3D animations used so often? Well, the uses for 3D animations are endless. Mostly we notice amazing visual effects that astound the viewer, or are often used to create scenes thout couldn't be done without CGI (computer-generated imagery). There are really no limits to what can be created. If it can be imagined, it can be created. These CGI effects are used in much more than just high budget cinema.

As technology advances it becomes less costly and less time consuming to create stunning 3D visual effects. We see the use of 3D in informational videos and documentaries to help visualize how a product works. We see it in advertisements to add visual imapact or show how a product works. We see it so much that sometimes we don't even notice, and with the photo realism that can be achieved we might not even be able to tell if it is real or CGI.

This Citroen commercial is an example of a photorealistic CGI car that might fool you into thinking that it is real, untill it gets up and starts dancing that is.

3D animation can be a very powerful tool that not only looks cool, but can be informative at the same time. The advancements in software and computer processing speed makes the use of 3D animations an affordable video solution.

Currently at Sitepro.com we are creating an interactive video for TrunksUSA.com. The video will feature an animated 3D trunk along with motion graphics composited with video footage. By using a CGI truck we are able to create movements and camera motions that would be very difficult to achieve with a real trunk and camera.

This trunk was created with Autodesk Maya and will be featured in the interactive video at TrunksUSA.com

Be sure to visit TrunksUSA.com in the near future to see thi final video and witness the full impact of the animated content.
