Are pictures worth a thousand words? In regards to websites, most definitely true. Images are a very powerful way to convey many different things about you and your company. Images also add visual concrete evidence to back up text in your website. Studies have shown that our brains are more easily drawn to familiar real life objects than words. A good image captures attention, conveys emotion, and can even tell a story. Large, dominant images tell the viewer’s eye where to look first. Directing the viewer’s eye along a very specific path has been designed into the website.
What makes a good image? Effective images need to have a focus. Cropping can be one of the best ways to achieve a focused image by eliminating all the unwanted clutter and focusing just on the subject. Using available or natural lighting can also give an image a softer, more inviting feel than using the harsh light of a flash. Black and white images can be very effective in a particularly artistic site and highly contrasted color images can bring vibrance to a modern abstract site.
Images are a crucial element to any website and bring visual evidence to further enhance your text. Here are a couple examples of superbly designed websites that use images to convey not only particular emotions, but also draw the viewer’s eye throughout the site.
