YouTube Video 101

Jul 27, 2009 9:03 am by Keif Oss

5 years ago clients typically wanted videos in a format that they can easily hand out such as DVD or interactive CD. As a multimedia supplier, Sitepro.com was unique from other production companies in that we were streaming videos within client websites as well. While physical deliverables and inter-website distribution have still been a stronghold, more clients are inquiring about services like YouTube, Facebook and other social media applications.

While there are lots of other social video sites out there, YouTube has proven to be the top of the crop. Did you know that YouTube is the number one video site on the internet? Get this: It’s the 4th largest internet destination in the world and the #2 search engine behind Google and before Yahoo…….just huge. Often clients ask me questions like :

"How can I get my Video on YouTube?"

"How can we create a Facebook account and put my videos in it?"

"We just want to make some simple videos and upload them. Where do we start?"

Follow this series, YouTube Video 101, to gain some insight on these questions as well as thoughts you may not have considered when developing videos for social media and website use.

YouTube 101 will be a 4-part series. Stay tuned for these blog posts:

1)      YouTube Pro's and Con's

With an audience of nearly 330 million users worldwide, the YouTube format cannot be ignored. You can use YouTube hosting to present your video content to this audience as well as embed video feeds from YouTube in your company website. While YouTube presents some incredible new possibilities, there can be some drawbacks that companies may not be fully aware of.

2)      YouTube Basics: Account Setup , Video Upload, Video Embedding & Monitoring

Setting up an account with YouTube is relatively simple. After creating an account, uploading videos can be achieved with similar ease. Understanding the features of your account, as well as getting the highest video playback quality, becomes a little more difficult. Often I have clients ask questions like,

“Why can’t I get the “View in HD” option to work?”

“How do I get YouTube videos to populate other websites?”

This post will provide a guide for creating an account, uploading video that looks great, embedding YouTube videos in other sites and using tools to learn about audience responses to your videos.

3)      Digital Video Creation: A Guide to Making Your Own Video

So you’ve decided that you’d like to make some sort of video for YouTube upload. Now you just need the tools to make it. This post will communicate:

-          The very basics of planning a video

-          The tools you’ll need to create a video for YouTube upload

-          Output formats to achieve the highest quality results on YouTube

4)      Videos that work on Youtube

“Hey, I uploaded my companies 30 second commercial to YouTube and nobodies watching it? I air it on cable and feedback surveys tell me people have called the office due to television exposure. How come it’s not working on YouTube?”

Questions like the one above are both commonplace and justified. This post will explore what kind of videos succeed and fail in the YouTube environment. Consider this post before creating content that is YouTube specific, or if you’re trying to build a campaign that will work cross-media in both broadcast and social media environments.
