Just One More ...

Aug 5, 2009 3:11 pm by Kristen Cooley

I have been heard saying that from time to time when I am photographing weddings, senior pictures or any portraits with children.  My son says he is going to need therapy when he is old because of the nagging dream he has of his mother saying, “just one more!”  Kind of like the dreams of being chased by something and not being able to run.

I am always amazed that for some, one pop of the flash and they start to walk away like we’re all done.  Maybe I obsess too much over the end product, but in my experience-especially with large groups-4 out of 5 images will catch someone doing something or looking weird.  A little overkill will usually produce one really great photo or at least a couple good ones to choose from.  Also, taking photos from several different angles will produce completely different results about the same subject.

I will concede that time is of the essence in a lot of photography situations and your skills must be quick and accurate.  With children, you get maybe 2-3 chances at a time to get what you want and they have moved on to the next thing.  Bridal parties are also not so interested in taking a lot of time for pictures.  One little ring bearer said to me recently, “Am I done yet? You take so many pictures!”  This was after I had taken five shots…most of which he was sticking his tongue out.  (He was so very cute though).

I will probably always be a photographer that says “one more” much to my children’s dismay, but am willing to risk therapy for that “one great shot!”
