Fruit Baskets – Comparing Apples to Apples

Sep 1, 2009 8:01 am by Steve Allingham

I recently met with a client to discuss some updates for their site.  The first thing they brought up was a quote they had received from a local web development company to redo their site for just $300, which supposedly “offered everything Sitepro offers for a lot less.”  Well, I know lots of companies like to claim they do what we do for "less", but it’s just not true, and this quote was a prime example.

First of all, the gentleman selling the cheap site told my client they would have a content management system (CMS) to allow them to make changes to any page of their site – but the actual contract said that changes would be charged out at $100 per hour, one hour minimum.  Which would you rather believe – the verbal hyperbole or the signed contract?

I turned to the next page of this “competitive” quote and found they offered Search Engine Optimization at additional cost – basic SEO, which is far less than we offer, was “just” $99 per month.  SEO with keyword research was $300 per month.   For “extensive” SEO, the cost was a mere $999 per month.  Ouch!  That puts things in perspective!

But it got worse: hosting and technical support were
extra, something Sitepro includes with all of our websites.

So the final cost for this competitive quote over three years (which is the lifespan of the average site) could well be over $35,000 – for a website quote that claimed to cost just “$300”.

Next time a company claims to “do everything Sitepro does for a lot less,” that’s a good indication it’s time to pull out the reading glasses.  That quote may seem like a bargain, but when you compare apples to apples, you just might find out the other one is rotten.
