1. A domain name has to be easy to remember and to spell. It also should contain your most important keywords. So in many instances the best domain name is NOT the name of your company if it isn't unique. A great example is if you are a whitewater rafting outfitter in Colorado the best domain name might just be RaftingColorado.

2. The title tag is the most important tag on your website. Search engines expect the title tag to define the site, so make sure you state your product, service and location in it.

3. You MUST know who your customer is, and what they want. This seems really simple when you read it but as we all have experienced in marketing many times we think we know who our customers are but when we step back and review the research on who is buying our products many times we have to redefine our customer base.

4. On the web your company better be easy to find. Your phone number, email address, etc should be on the contact page and in multiple places throughout the site. When a customer is shopping, they want answers now, not emails tomorrow. Most customers hate to fill out online forms but are willing to live chat with someone. Providing direct email links, phone number, live chats will make it really easy for the customer to purchase from you and will greatly increase the odds that they will then refer your website to friends and colleges.

5. Do not expect new customers to only do business entirely online. As we outlined about many customers would like to talk to you (Many are willing to do this on a live chat forum) but some will still want to contact you on the phone to develop a comfort level. If your website also offers an ecommerce option (which we recommend you have) you will still need to allow customers who aren't comfortable with putting the credit card information online the ability to call someone and provide this information.

6. Your website is an essential business tool and must be a quality website. It is your image, it is how people will perceive your company and in today's global world it might be the only part of your business that a potential client ever sees. Would you allow your bricks and mortar building to become dilapidated? Then you shouldn't let your website become old and out of date. If you want to be professional then you must look professional.

7. Finally your website must be optimized for the search engines. What good is having a website if no one can find it? Search engine optimization is a skill that many people do not have and therefore working with a web company that has specialists in search engine optimization is extremely important. When people hesitate on this one - I like to tell them.....if you had a toothache would you try and repair it yourself or would you see a dentist.
