Create a Call to Action

Dec 3, 2008 1:31 pm by Emmy Bill

So many website owners get caught up in the “rankings game”; so much that they forget what it was in the first place that their website was supposed to accomplish.

So why do you have a website, and when you first decided to build a website what did you want? You wanted more business probably, but how did you want your website to accomplish this goal. It’s pretty well understood in the SEO industry that rankings mean little unless they convert into something tangible. You can rank very well for a competitive keyword; but convert very few of the visitors who find your site.

If you are a psychiatrist with a website and have worked hard, or paid large amounts of money, to rank well for the keyword depression counseling, what action have you have set in place for your visitors to take when they arrive at your site?

Does the page your visitor lands on while searching for a specific keyword you are optimized for offer a Call to Action such as:

  • A way to contact you directly at once to get information on how you can help them.
  • A contact form for them to complete so you can answer them via e-mail or phone.
  • A downloadable brochure, flyer or some type of promotional material for them to keep on hand.
  • A way to sign up for your newsletter, blog or future product/service announcements.
  • A way to purchase something right now.
  • A way to bookmark your website.
  • A way to sign up for a future seminar or presentation.
Not all of these Calls to Action will apply to your business model, but if a visitor gets to your website, which is a selling tool for your business, think about what you want them to do.

Internet users are increasingly fast, they scan websites and extract useful information then move onto the next. Make your website work for you by retaining your visitor in some way, getting their information for future contacts or converting them directly.
