Have a voice? Use it! - The Language of Blogs.

Mar 27, 2009 11:15 am by Matt King

You could be forgiven for not jumping on board the blogging bandwagon. As someone in business, I'm sure you understand there's always an inherent risk involved when undertaking something new. But there's a real benefit in putting yourself out there for the world to see. Read more about it after the jump.

Blogs offer the ability to do many things. Without having any knowledge of web publishing, they allow anyone (even the less-than-tech-savvy) to share trends in an industry, supply an audience with links to exceptional content, filter information and engage others in a way previously only seen in the Letters to the Editor section of their weekly newspaper.

Blogs, at their core, are simply a way to give yourself a voice in the internet age. However, while providing information (some useful and some not) is clearly the aim of blogs, an inherent benefit to blogging is the opportunity to give you and your company personality. However you want to come across, be it critical, humorous, sarcastic, thoughtful, irreverent or knowledgeable...it comes out in your writing.

As is the case in any form of writing, there are norms and accepted ways to communicate. Reporting is providing a formal account of something that's transpired. Professional journals (for example those of the medical variety) are analytical and informative. Bottom line, there is a kind of language you expect to see and it gives little insight into the person behind the keyboard.

Blogs are different.

Don't worry about sounding cold or detached! Think of your blog as an extension of your personality. Share anecdotes, personal observations and experiences that lend themselves towards connecting you with your audience. Build relationships by interacting with your readers. Doing so can go a long way towards expanding your reach and clientele.

On that note, as this is my inaugural addition to the Sitepro Blog, I'd like to share a couple of my favorite blogs on the net. They're informative, entertaining, and in my opinion express all that is good about the world of blogging.

Enjoy.
