10 Steps to a Website - How Sitepro Builds Websites

Jun 11, 2009 10:00 am by Kate Rafko

So just how is a website developed? Building a website may seem like an overwhelming process, but we make it as simple as possible by taking it one step at a time. The following outlines the 10 steps that Sitepro takes with each of our website clients. For us, it's a tried and true process.

Step 1: Learn about you and your most important customer
Before we begin the project, we take the time to understand your company, your customer, and your goals. A needs analysis is put together so that all members of the Sitepro team can read about your company's vision for your website.

Step 2: Propose a tailored, creative website solution
Upon learning more about your company, an account representative prepares a proposal that outlines suggested website features. After you sign the proposal, a development team (consisting of a writer, keyword specialist, designer, and developer) is off and running!

Step 3: Create a sitemap that outlines the site
The development process begins with the sitemap. The sitemap is an outline of all pages that will be included on your site (such as Services, About Us, Contact Us, etc). The sitemap will serve as a checklist for gathering content.

Step 4: Develop meaningful, keyword-rich content
When an initial sitemap is complete, the content collection phase begins. Using a combination of company literature and interview notes from employees, we write content that will be placed on each page. Keywords that will help with search engine optimization (making sure you're found on Google, Yahoo, and MSN) are worked into the content.

Step 5: Create an eye-catching design that communicates your brand
When sufficient content has been gathered for each page of the sitemap, the design begins! The designer typically has a short teleconference with you to discuss goals, vision, and the company's established look. Upon gathering this info, the designer creates one or two initial designs. The design may be reworked at the your request until it looks just right!

Step 6: Develop the back-end programming that makes your site work
Upon receiving approval on the design, a website developer begins writing the code for the site. When complete, the text and photos are placed on the site.

Step 7: Review the test site and make final changes before it goes live
A link is sent to the client so that they can begin navigating and reviewing the site as if it was live. We continue to tweak the site until you are 100% happy with how the site looks and functions.

Step 8: Train you how to use Sitepro's content management system (it's easy, you'll see)
Every Sitepro site comes with a content management system so that content and images can continue to be added to the site post-launch. Training on how to operate the content management system takes place in our in-house training room or at your business location.

Step 9: Test the website to make sure everything is functioning properly
Before a site goes live, Sitepro thoroughly tests the site to ensure that it functions exactly as it should.

Step 10: Launch your new website to the World Wide Web!
3-2-1 blastoff! Upon receiving your final approval, the site is launched!
