We've come a long way since the days of Tron.  Actually the first use of 3D graphics in a major motion picture was in the movie Futureworld (1976).   Now we see 3D effects everywhere, but why do are these 3D animations used so often?   Well, the uses for 3D animations are endless.   Mostly we notice amazing visual effects that astound the viewer, or are often used to create scenes thout couldn't be done without CGI (computer-generated imagery).   There are really no limits to what can be created.  If it can be imagined, it can be created.
