In order to better serve its customers and ensure crop production, Nutrien created a network of Innovation Farms – an initiative where new agriculture products, practices, and technologies can be practiced in real-world conditions and environments. By generating practical, field-level data, Innovation Farms are helping Nutrien confidently determine what works for certain growers across the country.

It’s within this environment the relationship between Nutrien and SitePro began.
“We’ve done testing for years and we’ve always done it on farms,” said Nutrien Division Agronomist John Quillin. “Irrigation studies, we do nutritional studies with different fertilizers, basically all of our proprietary products we try to generate data for our customers and for our sales people so they have something reliable to count on.”
However, Quillin said the system Nutrien previously had in place did not provide the precise data Nutrien needed to adequately measure and quantify its products and technologies.
Nutrien Project and Asset Manager Ed Yoakum said he was investigating new technologies to use at its new Innovation Farm in West Texas when he stumbled upon Texas Tech’s Research Farm, which had been utilizing SitePro.
“It was very impressive,” he said.
SitePro began its install at Nutrien’s Innovation Farm in West Texas at the beginning of 2025 with installation of a subsurface drip irrigation system and implemented the instrumentation for equipment and the automation system later that spring.
“Then we kicked growing season off and its been great ever since then,” said SitePro’s Business Development Manager Tyler Lowry.

Because of the objective of the Innovation Farm and precise data requirements, Nutrien is using a host of meters and sensors to track the data they’re applying to the crops on a very granular per-zone basis. All of that information is visible in real-time, allowing operators to see and determine what is working.
Nutrien’s South Plains Precision Ag Specialist Ky Houchin emphasized the ability to track how much water is being used and how much is actually needed is extremely beneficial from a water conservation and sustainability perspective.
“If we can measure how many gallons per acre we’re putting on a zone, we can fit it with our right products as well as the right seed,” he said. “So if our seed is performing better at a lower use rate of water, we can know that and place it on the right place for the grower.”
In addition to a panel on-site that displays irrigation and fertigation data, Nutrien users are also utilizing SitePro’s mobile app to remotely manage the farm from anywhere.
“The app tells me everything I need to know,” Quillin said. “I have testing locations across Texas, the western half of Oklahoma, and all of New Mexico so I’m not always on-site. So as soon as I need to make a change, or if I notice there’s a problem, the SitePro system alerts me and either I can shut it down or change it or I can have someone close by go and change it.”
Another perk to SitePro’s software is its scalability. The system is able to be adjusted and expanded as operations require changes or more visibility, which is beneficial to Nutrien as it expands testing capabilities and products on its farms.
“One of the most important aspects of SitePro to Nutrien was our flexibility in bringing in multiple sensors, meters, pumps, and having the scalability to add more or give more visibility,” Lowry said.
